Fire Hose Reels – The Hidden Danger of Cutting Corners

This article has been supplied.

When a fire breaks out, a hose reel can be the difference between a minor incident and major damage. But that’s only true if it’s properly installed and fully compliant with safety standards.

SafeQuip, a trusted leader in fire safety, understands that fire protection leaves no room for error, which is why their SABS 543-approved hose reels are built for reliability, engineered to perform under pressure, and designed to meet the highest safety standards.

Fire Hose Reels and The Law

A fire hose reel delivers a controlled, high-pressure stream of water to help contain fires before they escalate. Under South African regulations (SANS 10400-T), all hose reels must comply with SANS 543 standards, but not all hose reels on the market meet these requirements. A substandard hose can split, leak, or fail entirely under pressure. If your hose reel isn’t compliant and something goes wrong, you could also be held legally responsible. It may also void your insurance cover in the event of a fire-related claim.

Is Your Fire Hose Reel Compliant?

A fire hose reel is only as reliable as the standards it meets. Here’s how to make sure yours is up to standard.

1. SABS Certificate: The hose on your reel must be certified under SANS 1086. Don’t just take a supplier’s word for it - ask for the SABS Certificate of the manufacturer who made the hose. If they can’t provide it, walk away.

2. SANS Marking: Some suppliers bring in fully assembled hose reels from overseas with fake SANS markings. The hose might have ‘SANS 1086’ printed on it, but that doesn’t mean it actually meets the standard. It could be a cheap copy. When in doubt, take a photo of the hose and its markings. Send it to the manufacturer listed on the SANS 1086 permit provided to confirm whether it’s really theirs. You might be surprised how often that branding is used without permission.

Ask your supplier the right questions:

  • Is the hose SANS 1086 certified?
  • Can you provide the SABS Certificate from the hose manufacturer?
  • Was the reel assembled locally or imported?
  • Is the company listed on the manufacturer’s certification schedule?
  • Can you provide the SABS 543 Certificate?

If you don’t get clear answers, that’s your sign to look elsewhere.

What About Hose Servicing?

Just like extinguishers, fire hose reels need regular inspection and maintenance. Ensure your fire equipment is annually serviced by an Authorised Person working for a SANS 1475 certified company. Details can be verified on the SAQCC Fire Website.

Why Choose SafeQuip?

Compliance isn’t just about avoiding fines or keeping the fire inspector happy. It’s about safety. A proper fire hose reel, fitted with a certified hose and installed by a reputable company, is a lifeline when things go wrong.
